As a busy homemaker, finding the time to exercise can be tough. When you spend every day trying to raise and educate your children, keeping your house clean, washing, ironing and putting away everyone’s clothes, meal planning, food shopping, and cooking, kissing scraped knees, reading bedtime stories, packing lunches, and keeping up with your own social life, exercise has to take a back seat. Of course, you are getting some exercise. Cleaning a house and chasing after your family can easily clock up quite a few steps, and every time you are moving, it counts as activity. But, if you want to stay fit and healthy, and able to take care of your family and home to the best of your ability, it’s not enough. You need to get regular cardio activity and strength training as often as you can.

Exercise has many benefits. It helps to keep your body and mind young, it looks after your mental health and gives you a little much-needed stress relief. It boosts your confidence and mood and gives you a great way to meet new people and reconnect with yourself. It lowers your heart rate, helps you to maintain a healthy weight, lowers your blood pressure and cuts your risk of developing serious illnesses and conditions.
So, when you’re so busy at home, that you’ve barely got time to stick to a healthy routine of exercise, the best thing that you can do is make sure you make the most of the workouts that you do get. Many people go to the gym and spend most of their time walking between machines or catching up around the water cooler. When they are exercising, they take it easy, don’t push themselves and barely break a sweat or get their heart rate up. That’s fine if you go regularly and get other exercise throughout the week. But, when your workout time is limited, it’s important that you make the most of it. Here are some tips to help you.

Get a Soundtrack

Many people find that music helps them to stay focused and push themselves harder. They don’t get bored of being on cardio machines or running when they’ve got something they enjoy listening to. Instead, they work out to the beat of the music, feet hitting the ground with every beat, getting faster and pushing harder as the music does. Check out the best workout headphones, for a way to listen safely on the go.

When it comes to building a playlist, think about what you want from the music. You can use an app or program to help you find the right music, with the correct beats per minute for a workout. If you just want to listen to music that you enjoy, without worrying about tempo, it’s still a good idea to avoid anything too slow or emotional. Instead, find upbeat tunes that make you smile and feel good.

Music is excellent, but not everyone finds it helpful. If you can’t find a soundtrack that pushes you forward, why not try a motivational podcast or even an audiobook that you enjoy?

Set Yourself Goals

One of the best ways to make the most out of each workout is with a plan. Go to the gym without aim or goals, and you’ll never push yourself, which means that you’ll never improve, your stamina will never get better, your muscles will never get stronger and you won’t burn as many calories as you should. You might also find aimless workouts get boring, and you give up quickly.

Set yourself some goals and write them down. Have long-term targets, for where you want to be in a few months to a year, and then break them down. Set yourself weekly targets and try to lift a little more or run a little further every week. You might even want to speak to a trainer to get some advice on how to hit your targets, or what your goals should be to get the results that you are looking for.

Warm Up

Working out without a warm-up can mean that your body isn’t able to exercise as well as it should. You won’t be able to achieve the results that you want, and your workout won’t be as effective, because your muscles aren’t ready for it. A warm-up prepares your body and allows it to give more. If you are going for a run, walk for a few minutes, and then gently stretch out your muscles before picking up your speed. If you prefer to work out at the gym, or with a home video, take the time to stretch every muscle group carefully, and start slowly before starting to push yourself harder.

Lift Weights

Weights are a great way to get more out of your workouts. Start every session with some weights. If you’ve never lifted before, start on a weight that you can manage comfortably. Lifting three sets of ten reps on each side. With a short break in between. Increase your weights as you can, without injuring yourself.

Lifting weights can increase your metabolism and give your muscles a kick start. This won’t just maximize the impact of your cardio session. It can also mean that everything you do later burns more calories than it usually would, for up to 36 hours.

Enjoy Your Workouts

Some of us love going to the gym, we enjoy every second of our exercise program and can’t wait to go back another time. Others, don’t. If you don’t like exercise, you are much less likely to do it, and even more unlikely to push yourself hard and stick to a program. You’ll give up as soon as you can or take it easy. If you love what you are doing, you’ll give it more effort and more enthusiasm.

So, find something that you love. Try different classes and exercise videos online. Join groups, try different machines at the gym, have a go at team sports and find out what’s going on in your local area.
