With hurricane Florence tearing across the US, typhoon Mangkhut blasting the South of Asia, and countless other storms hitting the world each year, more and more people are becoming concerned about the weather. These primal forces have the power to destroy homes and lives, and they don’t stop for anyone, making it important to know how to keep your place safe in the face of these events. Preparation

The preparation work you need to do in the case of storm depends on the weather you’re going to face. In most cases, the outside will be the most important part of your place to consider, and this is where you should start. Windows can be boarded up, furniture and other items can be tied down or brought inside, and holes which could let water in can be sealed. Altogether, this should be enough to overcome most storms. In extreme cases, evacuation orders will be issued, and it’s important to follow this advice, as it can often save lives. If you aren’t going to leave, though, you will need to prepare yourself for a long stay indoors. This will mean stocking up on essentials like food, water, batteries, and anything else which you might need to keep your home comfortable while the storm rages on.

During The Storm

With all of your preparation complete, you will be ready to live through the storm which is approaching. Of course, though, it’s worth thinking about what you’re going to do while it rages on outside. If you have kids, it will be worth thinking of some activities which can be done without electricity, as this will help to keep them from getting scared, while also making sure that you can concentrate. To give yourself the chance to keep up to date with the outside world, having a battery powered radio will be a good idea, along with a way to charge your phones if the power goes out. It’s never worth venturing out into a storm, even if you think that it is safe, as things can easily go wrong in this sort of environment.

The Aftermath

Once the storm is over, there will probably be some work to do, and getting it done will be your priority, just in case the weather turns again. There is likely to be a lot of debris on your property, but this will be easy to clean. It’s worth being careful with this waste, though, as it will be hard to know what you might find, and there could be hazards which you don’t expect. Along with this, if you have any water in your home, you will need to focus on making things dry. The longer a building stays wet, the worse the damage will be, and this often means spending a lot of time using buckets to get rid of it.

Along with the clean up, you will also need to start think about some repairs. Broken windows will need to be fixed as soon as possible, though this is unlikely to be an issue of you’ve boarded them up properly. This makes it well worth contacting them as soon as you can to make sure that you can take advantage of their support. Finally, as the last part of your repairs, you may need to report any damage to public property which could impact your home, as this will often be left for a very long time if no one makes the authorities aware.
